buttons and bows and velcro (10/7/24)

aside

when it comes to buttons and fastenings on clothing, for men they always fasten on the right, and for women, on the left, no one actually knows for certain how this came about though there are plenty of bizarre theories... I think the most reliable one, at least for the time being, is that in the olden days, or days of yore, where men usually dressed and undressed themselves, women on the other hand had clothing so tricky to fasten that they often needed someone to help dress and undress them, hence why their buttons, or fastenings, are the on the left so they can be more easily manipulated by someone facing you, although, even this one is a little flaky as not every woman would have had help… zips seem to have followed this rule though, for men, the right, for women, the left, even though they came about much later in 1893 at the earliest, though not quite the zips we know today which were patented in 1917… nevertheless, even now this rule still applies more out of habit than logic… even velcro follows this rule, though nowadays there is a lot more unisex clothing which tends towards the fastening, whatever it is, being on the right…. the kimono doesn’t recognise this at all and simply goes for left over right, as in right under left, whether worn by a male or female… perhaps it simply goes back to a bias towards right-handed people being that there are, statistically, more right-handers than left, as in around 85% being right, just under 15% being left, leaving the rest for the truly ambidextrous, though this still remains rare… but then, there are fewer left-handed women than there men left-handed... it’s all a bit bonkers really……

beside

my word of the week will be...... blunge!... and as a two-for-the-price-of-one, blunger!... the first is to mix clay with water (to blunge or not to blunge.....), and a blunger?... someone who mixes clay with water, so, what you need to ask yourself is, are you a blunger?.....

seaside

still jaded after all these years...
