it (7/4/24)

it,
what a wonderful word,
it,
comes from id
id,
the primitive energies,
urges and drives,
that unconscious mass
from which come our instincts,
for gratification
those basic desires,
and yes, I also mean those,
id,
and not the ego
that self-styled you
that confident or
over-confident you,
nor superego,
not superhero,
the diplomat,
reasoner, go-between,
the conscience, the guilt
the side that stops
the ego getting too
full of itself,
and the id getting too
impulse intent
and sending a flood
of endorphins
into the blood,
id,
it’s also a fish,
while ‘it’
can also be this
or also be that,
two little letters
to carry such loads
to bear such weight
all on its own,
a pronoun for everything,
everyone,
every time
you can’t think of a word
or a name
or a thing
transpose the word ‘it’
so, hoorah for the id
for giving us ‘it’
with a snap and click
so tidy, so slick
always and ever
the perfect fit.
