what about tomorrow? 3rd September 2015

I wondered what would make people, the politicians and public alike here, sit up and pay attention.... and come to the conclusion that 'migrants', 'immigrants', 'refugees', 'foreigners!' aren't actually a different species and are in fact, just like us, Homo sapiens........ funny how fickle the media and press are about such things..... one minute they're are shouting, "keep them out!", and "an Englishmans home is his castle!".... and my personal fave, "Johnny foreigner!".... which, by the way, is a derogatory phrase......... so what did it take?..... a photograph.... yes folks something as 2D and potentially mundane as a humble photo.......... of a child, dead, face down on the sand on a beach......... among all the horrific photos that went before and of all of the people who have already died, of all ages and cultures it was this one that today has made, at least some, peel back their consciences and think, "ooh, that refugee crisis......" ........ well, actually it wasn't the photo, it was a dead child that did it..... or maybe it was the photo..... not simply for it being a photo but for the context in which it was used.... to publicly and globally shame those responsible for refusing those seeking refuge from political, war and religious persecution any kind of asylum and safety........a photo.... one of the thousands taken lit someones touchpaper......... it's not the dead child that did it though, it's the humiliation felt by countries leaders and how it might affect their popularity ratings that's the impetus.... thus the power not just of a photo but of the context.... with a different caption and, say put on page 10 of newspapers rather than the front page, maybe it wouldn't do what it's doing today........... but this is today, what of tomorrow?.......... how many more images before once again the public and politicians alike become photo- and refugee-blind?
