windfalls, 28th October 2013

the day after the clocks went back... the day after the night the storm swept... the day after the sky wept......... a frenetic dance of trees....... the smell of coffee....... the last butterfly........... clouds come and go and come and go...... a litter of litter snatched from open bins and littered across the road......... black plastic caught in thorns like well-worn ghosts who've given up the ghost.......... coats pulled tight around, tighter if you're a dog......... gutters wash away the last of the rains.......... trains still running despite the flurry of leaves escaped from their trees to dance a playful whirlygig........ mountains come and go with the clouds that come and go, now I see them now I don't......... is it autumn or winter, or afterautumn..... winterfore?........ everywhere is on a cusp..... what will the weather do next?........ cast a guess and see what I catch......... hopefully not an out of control Jackdaw trying to fly this way but being blown that......... apples strewn as windfalls on the ground, impressions of puffballs as though they grew there instead of falling prey to gravity..... and the wind......... maybe cider? or stewed apple? either could be their fate........ or a wormy feast.... that's if the gulls don't eat all the worms first.... though that would be some feat considering there is the inordinate number of worms in a single square metre of soil.......... it's the day after the clocks went back...... still, disoriented......
