shuffling madness, 20th October 2013

there's a lot of things I don't understand.... maybe that's just age grumbling....... like the 'iPod generation', so to speak, and it's the last time I'll use that product name as I hate being a tool of their marketing... or what I call the 'i shuffle' generation... because..... they shuffle their music, spending more time shuffling or messing about with the technology than actually enjoying the music as it was intended..... consuming like fast food...... the art of mastication... read my lips, yes I did say mastication..... chewing before swallowing, gone in favour of simply swallowing one food course after another and not actually tasting it....... digital sound can be a bit like pixels if wrongly recorded, all the same with no variation.... akin to travelling on the Underground where the view never changes, as opposed to travelling on a train above ground where the unevenness of the scenery constantly grabs your attention..... I like albums, as in long player records... that much-missed phrase, "long-player", or LP........ the track-listing, or compiling, is not a random thing, it's done that way for a reason.... a carefully-crafted journey, a story, chapters maybe, or more fittingly, a suite of movements..... they don't all have to be progressive rock or a symphony... two sides of the same coin by the way...... even LP's with simply a set of individuals, and seemingly unconnected songs are still are placed, one after another, specifically to take you somewhere.... to 'shuffle' them in most cases would be similar too reading a book in a totally random order, picking and choosing chapters to read in any other way than sequentially......... somewhere something gets lost in translation........ you may fulfill your basic sustenance needs, but, you fail to taste the fullness of its manifold flavours........ or maybe that's just age grumbling.......
