so Waterstone's bookshop (pay attention to the /'/ apostrophe as this will be important as this blog progresses) wishes to drop the apostrophe(<-- see!) in their name.... and have it say 'Waterstones' instead.... thereby changing the whole meaning of the name and word and losing the possessive sense... what are they thinking? Oh to have been a fly on the wall at that meeting..... a bookshop... yes a 'book'shop, which prides itself in language and epecially the written word is considering the use of bad grammar in its own name is pretty bizarre... the reason? apparently the 'apostrophe' is not appropriate for the Internet anymore.... lordy!.... they are demonising a punctuation mark and worse still advocating its misuse by erasing it form their name..... (looks on with mocking disbelief).... maybe, if they are so desperate to distance themselves form something as benign as an apostrophe then they could have considered simply calling the book shop the name of its original founder.... 'Waterstone'... may as well remove the 's' anyway as it will be essentially redundant and faintly ridiculous without the apostrophe anyway.... this would never have happened under the original founding owners of the store.... sad how sell off after sell off, with Waterstone's being pushed form pillar to post that it has come to this banal and absurd moment.... yes, I know it's a small point in the scale of things, but some principles are worth upholding don't you think?
...... save our punctuation!
